FIELD LAYOUT

The field shall be laid out according to the instructions provided in the "Official Rules of Baseball" , Diagrams No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3. Additional information can be found in the "Knothole Club of Greater Cincinnati, Inc." Rules and the "Milford Community Baseball" Supplemental instructions.

Initial layout of the playing field should be referenced from the rear point of home plate. Extend the tape measure from the rear point of home plate, down the first base line, past first base. Mark the base path distance as specified below. With the tape measure still in place (to be used as a straight line) drop a white lime line to the infield side of the tape measure. The outer edge of the lime line should be flush with the outer edge of home plate and the outer edge of first base (remember that the line is considered to be fair territory). Move the tape from the first base line to the third base line and repeat the lining process.

To insure the first base and third base lines are perpendicular (90 degrees to each other), place the end of the tape at the first base location (outer edge of white lime line). Extend the tape measure across the infield to the third base location (outer edge of the white line). The distance between the points should be as shown below. If the distance is greater than that which is shown below, the angle between first and third base lines is greater than 90 degrees. If the distance is less than that which is shown below, the angle between the first and third base lines is less than 90 degrees. (Adjustments to the first and third base positions should be based on ones best judgment. An inch or two variation will not make an appreciable difference in the outcome of any game. If you find a foot or two variation, you should strongly consider relining the field).

To correctly mark the second base location, place the end of the tape measure at the rear point of home plate. Extend the tape toward the second base location. Hold the tape at the "home to second" base distance specified below. Strike an arc across the approximate location of second base. Move the end of the tape from home plate to first base. Hold the tape at the "bases" distance specified below. Strike an arc across the approximate location of second base and across the other arc. Move the end of the tape from first base to third base. Hold the tape a the "bases" distance specified below. Strike an arc across the approximate location of second base and across the other arcs. All three arcs should intersect at the same point. The point of intersection is the center of second base. You should place an "X" of lime at the central point of second base to help locate the base as the game is played.

The pitchers plate is located by placing the end of the tape measure at the rear point of home plate. Extend the tape measure to second base. This will establish a straight line through the middle of the infield. The front edge of the pitchers plate is located at the "pitching" distance specified below. If the pitchers plate is not equipped with hold down spikes, use barn nails to secure the plate to the ground.

Refer to diagram No. 1 and No. 2 for proper layout of batters boxes, coaches boxes, and running lanes. Remember, if you do not line the above items prior to the beginning of a game, the rules regarding these items can not be enforced.
